An extraordinary place requires an extraordinary piano.
To support the plethora of cultural events held at ‘the social hub of Oxford’, The Oxford Union, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious debating societies, has partnered with Shigeru Kawai to become its official Piano Partner and accompany the wide variety of musical activities on offer within The Union. Under this partnership, a Shigeru Kawai SK-3 grand piano, a DG30 digital grand piano and an ES920 portable digital piano are now permanently housed in The Oxford Union’s historic buildings to be played at artist recitals, frequent social events, and the termly ball, as well as for use by the Union’s members.
As host to many of the world’s most famous figures including royalty, heads of state, leaders in the world of sports, film and music, The Oxford Union requires instruments fit for the very finest of occasions, and the most discerning of artists. For instance, in October 2023, acclaimed soprano, Aida Garifullina, was beautifully accompanied by Christian Wilson on the flagship Shigeru Kawai SK-EX concert grand piano throughout her recital in The Union’s famous Debating Chamber, with Shigeru Kawai acting as a worthy partner for this world-class concert.
Hand crafted in Japan by Master Piano Artisans, Shigeru Kawai instruments are praised by concert artists from around the world for their rich tonal quality, and highly responsive Millennium III action.
To enhance their already vibrant cultural activities, The Oxford Union will host a regular ‘Shigeru Kawai Concert Series’ for their members to enjoy the sounds of their SK-3 at the hands of celebrated artists from around the world.
“The Oxford Union is delighted to embark on a partnership with Shigeru Kawai. We are proud to write the next chapter of our history together with a partner who shares our values in the pursuit of excellence, whilst remaining innovative and adapting to the demands of our modern age.
This partnership will give our members the unique opportunity to experience some of the world’s finest musicians in concert as they visit The Oxford Union, and we look forward to the many great performances our new pianos will facilitate.”
– Mr Louis Wilson, President, The Oxford Union, 2024
